Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One
by on 14.08.2008. 22:23
(Deuteronomy 6:4) Av 13, 5768/August 14, 2008
This past Sunday, the ninth of Av, Jews the world over mourned the loss of the Holy Temple. The day is marked by Jews of all stripes, those more observant, and those less observant, as every Jew recognizes the great and enduring rent rendered in the fabric of our relationship with G-d as a nation and as individuals, as a result from the destruction of the Holy Temple at the hands of the Roman legions 1938 years ago. Righteous Gentiles, too, are counted among the mourners of the Holy Temple's destruction and desolation. In truth, all nations should mourn bitterly the loss of the house of G-d on Mount Moriah, as all the world stands diminished as a result.
Tune in to this week's Temple Talk as Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven reflect on Tish'a 'Av , look forward to Tu b'Av , investigate the weekly Torah reading of Ve'etchanan and describe the turnaround in the air as Menachem Av moves from destruction to renewal, and the first glimpses of Rosh Hashana appear on the horizon.

He has not beheld iniquity in Jacob

Balaam, the heathen prophet: brilliant, gifted ambitious... Our sages teach us that Balaam - Bilam - the Midianite enjoyed a level of prophecy equal to that of Moshe rabeinu - Moses our master, and Moses, of course, was the greatest prophet Israel ever had. So what went wrong? Why should a man chosen by G-d to receive prophecy make all the wrong decisions when it came to exercising his gift?

This is the ordinance of the Torah
by on 04.07.2008. 00:25
by Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, 5768/July 3, 2008
This week's Torah reading opens with the description of the laws concerning the red heifer, referring to these laws as "chukat haTorah - the ordinance of the Torah." (Numbers 19:2) Our sages teach us that Torah refers to it as "the ordinance of the Torah" and not simply as the law of the red heifer in order to emphasize that of all Torah ordinances the red heifer most exemplifies the true essence of an ordinance. And what is its true essence? An ordinance or chok is a specific genre of Torah commandments that are part of man's service to G-d, as opposed to commandments that are societal, or civil, or moral in nature. As such, the chok defies rational explanation, but its performance is an abiding testimony to man's faith in and dedication to G-d.
Tune in to this week's Temple Talk as Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven discuss the ordinance of the red heifer, Moses' great humility, and his unusual behavior concerning the rock.

In the Wilderness
by on 28.05.2008. 18:19
And HaShem spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after coming out of the land of Egypt...
(Numbers 1:1)
This upcoming Shabbat, in synagogues around the world the Jewish nation begins to read the book of Numbers, the fourth of the five books of Torah, written by the hand of Moshe rabbeinu - Moses our master. Called in English "Numbers" after the census which opens the book, it is known in Hebrew as Bemidbar - "in the desert." The book of Bemidbar shines a light on the thirty nine years in which the generation known as dor ha-dey'a - "the generation of knowledge" wandered bemidbar - "in the wilderness."

Tune in to this week's Temple Talk to hear Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven discuss Sefer Bemidbar - Numbers - the Book of the Wilderness, the enigmatic generation of knowledge, the upcoming festival of Shavuoth, and what it takes to not just become familiar with Torah, but to make it our own.
